Tale of the Kiddie Canvas: Part 6

I took bristles to this ole thrift store canvas once again a few days ago. The session that yielded this bit o work added quite a bit that I like (overall). The bowl, for one, was a few loose waves of paint here and there. And then also reinforced the swirls.

I had a dream about loose brush strokes a couple nights ago. Perhaps it was the Diebenkorn exhibit, or browsing the illustrated Food Rules, with fun, exuberant images by Maira Kalman. But it could feel the loose color in my fingers.

I’m getting close to the end and it feels like I need to start subtracting and adding one or two final things—images not provided by the original kid that made this. What’s a still life without a flower? Yes, I will add a flower.

This kiddie canvas experiment siddles up close to its own finish. I missed sharing one particularly ugly stage of development here. It was so horrid, wrong, and ugly, I changed it quick. It sat on my table less than 24 hours before I took another paint brush to it. And afterwards said, “WHEW, much better.”

I tried to add depth, and make some of the painting recede. Tried using muted cool colors. Ah-ha ha ha ha haa, what I know about painting. The result was busy and terrible, so I painted that pink back over it and all better.

Part 6 of the canvas is done and it is getting perilously close to the end, end, end. Will it be great or ruined?

Last week compelled me to make those three white swooshes on the right. So I did. And then, of course, the triangle rays insisted on appearing. I like where this painting is going, although it feels unbalanced right now. The color on the right is so much lighter than the bits on the left. Maybe I’ll attempt to even it out more next time.

Can you spot the two other additions?

So, ta-dah! Here it is—the latest in my re-use of a kid’s discarded canvas that I bought at a thrift store for $.50.

Remember that canvas I bought for two quarters? I gave the awesome bronze table some detail and depth. Then I washed out the back with a lovely pink. I cannot get enough of it.

Oops, there goes a streak of orange from the palette. Might as well leave that there. And oh god, some of the paint from my tile palette is coming up. Ohh, the back of that is sure pretty. I’ll use gel medium and paste it up.

Well, that was fun. Hmm. Where to next with this ole gal?
